Comments Off on Little Miss Higgins & the Winnipeg Five:November 23
Little Miss Higgins & the Winnipeg Five: Saturday, November 23, 8:00pm $15 /$10 students/arts workers/seniors From the Great Northern
Plains of Western Canada, The award-winning Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way, guitar in hand, lips blazoned red, onto any stage. As if she just drove in off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind her, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk. Whether it’s songs about passion or songs about panties, she writes about real things in a rooted and poetic way. Guitar and voice are her main instruments and her theatre background brings a “refreshing sound and story to the stage.” As a songwriter, she has been influenced by a range of artists from Memphis Minnie, Billie Holiday, Big Bill Broonzy to Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan. For her newest release, Bison Ranch Recording Sessions, Little Miss Higgins teamed up with a very talented quintet of musicians from Manitoba. We know them as the f-Holes (they’ve played here 3 or 4 times); she calls them the Winnipeg Five. As they play music in a similar vein as Higgins, it was a fitting alliance both onstage and in the studio…well, not quite a typical recording studio – the six of them decided to record in a barn, a barn on a bison ranch in rural Manitoba…. www.littlemisshiggins.com Listen! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcPas_B_CwA

Comments Off on An Evening with Garnet Rogers: November 22
An Evening with Garnet Rogers: Friday, November 22, 8:00pm $20 General Admission/$15 students/arts workers/seniors: “A brilliant songwriter.
One of the major talents of our time.” — The Boston Globe “The greatest interpreter and vocalist performing in the contemporary folk scene.” — Sing Out. We already know this, and we know that he was born in Hamilton to parents of Nova Scotian descent. We also know that Garnet spent hours listening to Grand Ol’ Opry broadcasts and harmonizing with his brother, the late folk legend Stan Rogers. At 18, Garnet was on the road as a full-time working musician with brother Stan, until Stan died tragically in a plane crash. Since then, Garnet has established himself as a formidable solo artist. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “…charismatic performer and singer…,” they continue by saying that “Garnet’s vocal and instrumental talents are complimented by an undeniably powerful physical presence — close to six and a half feet tall — with the lungs to match.” With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, his music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small every-day victories. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humor and lightning-quick wit move his audiences from tears to laughter and back again. Though Garnet has enjoyed much popularity over the years, he remains resolutely independent, turning down offers from major labels to ensure that he continues doing music his own way. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Garnet-Rogers/24500364751 Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHyTxGwAdnk

Comments Off on Don Brownrigg: CD Release Tour: November 21
Don Brownrigg: CD Release Tour: Thursday, November 21, 8:00pm $15 /$10 students/arts workers/seniors. It Takes All Kinds (to make this world, I
find) is both the new CD and Don`s philosophy. In a country known for multi talented singer/songwriters, the Halifax-based Brownrigg has written 10 honest and vivid tunes resulting in an absolutely unique album. Brownrigg, who is known for his charm on stage, captivates his audiences with his rich voice, with his storytelling and his soulful serenades. He has performed with the likes of Serena Ryder, Shawn Colvin, and Great Lake Swimmers. “There’s love, there’s loss, there’s hope, there’s regret,”says Brownrigg. “There’s seriousness and there’s silliness. I like it that way. It keeps you thinking about the good and the bad in everything. It takes all kinds.”
The Halifax Musicphile says: “It Takes All Kinds (to make this world, I find) is the best Canadian album released in 2013. ….. It hits all the right notes. The album will make you think; it will make you reflect; it will make you dance; it will make you sing; and it may even make you cry. And as for Brownrigg, this album should make him a household name.” http://donbrownrigg.ca Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg5P3_ai2IY
Wonderful Hamilton singer/songwriter, Matthew de Zoete will open for Don’s concert with his classic songwriting aesthetic of strong melodies and honest lyrics. Have a listen online at: www.mathewdezoete.com

Comments Off on “Beatles 63+73”: Saturday, October 26
“Beatles 63+73”: Saturday October 26. 8 p.m. $10 cover. Clearly well versed in all things “Fab”, Christopher Clause has been hosting Beatles’ tribute
shows in Hamilton for over 11 years now and has won three Hamilton Music Awards for his commitment. Once again he invites local talent to perform not only the 50th anniversary of the “With the Beatles” album but also the 40th anniversary of the solo recordings of 1973. “1973 was an important year for the Beatles, when each member released some of the best albums of their solo careers. When you hear the music back to back, the 10-year growth of the musicians is striking, hence the name 63+73.” The show is divided into two sections. First half: “With the Beatles” in its entirety, featuring a number of guest artists as well as Christopher’s band THE KINGS OF MARIGOLD (Chris Jamieson, Michael Scott, Andrew Aldridge and Peter Taplay). Second half: selections from the four solo albums, “Mind Games”, “Band on the Run”, “Living in the Material World”, and “Ringo”. The moneys raised for the show will go to FERMATA, a benevolent fund for local musicians and artists in need. The Pearl Company is excited and delighted to host this show which until this year, has been held at James Street Baptist Church (Tears here for the loss of that grand building.) Some of the guest artists for the show (at the time of writing; subject to change): Christopher Clause, Spider Costello, Fred D Smith, Gentleman Spectacles, Joshua Blair Lamothe, Nathan Fleet, Deborah McIvor, Susan Edwards.

Comments Off on THE FUGITIVES w Opener White Ash Falls October 25:
THE FUGITIVES: Friday, October 25: 8:00pm. $15 /$10 students/arts workers/seniors: This award-winning super-band’s current frontmen and
songwriters, Brendan McLeod, and Adrian Glynn, when not touring as musicians, are active in other artistic pursuits. McLeod is an award winning novelist and former Canadian SLAM poetry champion, while Glynn is a working actor receiving rave reviews for his roles. Their band is similarly eclectic, boasting prominent former members like Mark Berube and CR Avery, and a current rotating cast of supporters that includes violin-looping prodigy Hannah Epperson, multi-instrumentalist Steve Charles, and renowned actor Benjamin Elliot, alongside a host of multi-instrumentalists whose styles range from bluegrass to jazz. As McLeod puts it, “We’re like Broken Social Scene. But acoustic, and way less famous.” “The Fugitives are capable of achieving dizzying, Arcade Fire-ish crescendos, replete with parallel melodies, complex harmonies and brimming torrents of emotion.” UPTOWN MAGAZINE “This show is simply brilliant.” CBC http://www.fugitives.ca Very, very cool Fugitive’s video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uW4fI5-MRs
White Ash Falls opens: As one of Vancouver’s most sought-after sidemen, there’s no questioning Andy Bishop’s craftsmanship and musical smarts. He was a touring member of the rock band Yukon Blonde, the bassist for popsmith James Younger, and a singer-guitarist in the atmospheric folk group Twin River. It’s this balance of precision and spontaneity that shaped the sound of his sophomore album when penning his own country-tinged material as White Ash Falls, ‘Over the Night’. https://www.facebook.com/whiteashfalls/info

Astrid Young & Friends: Friday, October 18: 8:00pm. $15 /$10 students/arts workers/seniors. Another of those talented Youngs! Astrid is a singer-
songwriter with a half-brother and fellow musician by the name of Neil. Astrid’s solo acoustic shows have been compared to “Alice In Chains Unplugged” and have rallied fans all over the world, from the Whiskey-A-Go-Go in Hollywood to Paradiso in Amsterdam. Comments Off on Shari Vandermolen with SWINGLINE: Saturday, October 12
Shari Vandermolen with SWINGLINE: Saturday, October 12: 8:00pm. $15 /$10 students/arts workers/seniors. What began as a rehearsal band in
Millgrove, a project organized by Darren Blundell and Urmas Soomet, has now become a powerhouse of sound that is ready to be let out! The musicians of this band were originally brought together purely for the love of music with no ongoing commitment to “join the band”; it was simply an opportunity to play together and develop new musical connections. And then Shari Vandermolen’s rich vocals filled the niche that completed the band and SwingLine was born – an inspired band playing big band standards with some soulful R&B to round things off. This 10-piece “little big band” has got all the big-band-sound you’re looking for and they’ll be bringing you many of your favourite standards suitable for dancing or for sitting back and listening. https://swingline.webs.com

Comments Off on Kim Wempe: Friday, October 11
Kim Wempe: Friday, October 11: 8:00pm. $15 /$10 students/arts workers/seniors. A powerful performer with smoky vocals and an undeniable stage
presence, Kim Wempe has been tearing up highways and stomping her way across every stage in the country for the past three years. On the heels of her 2010 East Coast Music Award win and a 2011 ECMA nomination, her new album ‘Coalition’ is a big, bold, unapologetic leap into a whole new sound and has brought her a lot of attention from her peers. “Kim Wempe has one of those strong, raspy voices that’s only made better by whisky and more emotive by a sad song. She embodies the storytelling nature of the country genre, that slow burning hurt we know to be true of the blues, and these soulful gospel melodies that recall something almost spiritual.” -Alan Cross-Rock and Roll Journalist. “Kim Wempe sings directly from the soul, and the result is incredibly powerful. She instantly draws you in with her voice, and holds you there with the strength of her performance and her songs.” – Jill Barber http://kimwempe.com Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=- XFpv3CJ1qE

C.R. AVERY with THE WEBER BROTHERS! Saturday, October 5: 8:00. Admission: $20.00 adv. $25 @ door /$15.00 adv. students/artists/seniors $20 @
door. CR Avery: Outlaw Hip-Hop Harmonica Player, Beatbox Poet, Punk Piano Player, String Quartet Raconteur, Rock & Roll Matador, Playwright. C.R. Avery is a unique, raw, and dynamic performer. His genius lies in many genres – blues, hip-hop, spoken word and rock & roll. He is a one-man band, but one for this generation; with the rare ability to sing poetic verse while beatboxing simultaneously while pounding the piano and adding harmonica like a plot twist. To put the incredible live performance of CR with the equally astonishing WEBER BROTHERS, WOW. There are bands for which rock and roll is a lifestyle, and then there are bands for which it is life. Ten years ago the legendary Ronnie Hawkins, duly impressed by the pair’s immense raw talent, invited them to audition for his storied backing band, The Hawks. They survived the intense musical apprenticeship of his fabled “Rock ‘n’ Roll Bootcamp,” and six self-released albums later, the Webers have spread their wings, shared the stage with icons like Garth Hudson, Levon Helm, Leon Russell, Derek Trucks and Kris Kristofferson, and toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. Fusing the stomping country rock learned at Hawkins’ knee with the brothers’ own love of pop music in all its splendor, from gorgeous “Pet Sounds”/ “White Album” vocal harmonies to blacktop-burning 50’s rockabilly, full-throated Crazy Horse anthems to classic corner group doo-wop. Tightly focused in execution yet epic in scope. http://www.cravery.com/ http://www.weberbrothers.com/ Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3npGmpsL4v8
