“Langston Hughes vs. Joe McCarthy” Feb 27, 8 pm

Artword Theatre presents hughes_online_poster.jpg“Langston Hughes vs. Joe McCarthy”: A cabaret reading to honour Black History Month: Friday February 27 at 8 pm. $10 at the door.
On March 24, 1953, Langston Hughes, renowned poet of the Harlem Renaissance, was summoned before the McCarthy Committee  investigating communist subversion in the USA. This dramatic and musical evening celebrating Black History Month interweaves some of his testimony with selected poems. With the election of Barack Obama, it is worth looking back at how things were only a short time ago. Conceived and directed by Ronald Weihs, performed by Andrew Amoah and members of the Artword Theatre Ensemble.
