Dr. Susan Smith is the Founder and Director of Atzin in Mexico. While development work has taken her across the globe, Susan Smith is the founder and director of Atzin Community Development, a non-profit working collaboratively with the Indigenous community of Tlamacazapa, Guerrero, Mexico for the past 17 years.  Atzin is a Nahuatl word meaning ‘Sacred Waters’. Susan was chosen as the University of Calgary’s top alumnus in 2008; and CBC The National produced “Walking Together” in 2006 as special report on her work in Tlamacazapa. May 18, 25, June 1: The Willowbank Lecture Series presents: URBAN DWELLING : Creative ways to engage with our willowbank_page_0.jpgshared urban landscape. It is a beautiful 13-acre National Historic Site with an impressive 1830s mansion on the Niagara Parkway; it is a School of Restoration Arts, which grants a Diploma in Heritage Conservation to graduates of its intense three-year program; and it is a Centre for Cultural Landscape, which serves as a focus of research, workshops, lecture series, conferences, short courses, and consulting activities related to its mission.

A Bookbinding Workshop with BeetleBarrow Books – Japanese Stab Hardcover: Sunday October 14, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Join Chandra Rice and Lindsay Wood Slavin for the day as they temporarily transform The Pearl’s ground floor theater into an artist’s retreat — Learn how to make a Hardcover Japanese Stab Book in this day long workshop.

The Stab binding comes from Japan and is particularly useful for binding together pages that already have something on them. Poets can bind their writing for loved ones. Maids of honour can create a fully personalized guest book for their brides. Moms can bind together their child’s artwork. Or blank paper can be inspiration. Use ancient Japanese techniques and modern tricks of the trade. Choose papers, threads, and book cloth to create your cover. Choose paper for your text block and any ornamentation. Then bring it all together using traditional Japanese stitching! Walk away with a beautiful book with a touch of the east.

The all day workshop is $90 and includes use of tools, all materials, and even a home made lunch.
