A Little Out There, an exhibition of the paintings of Ellen Irving. Opening: June 12 & 13. 8:00 -11:00 pm, in The Pearl Company Gallery, 16 Steven Street. Ellen Irving is a Hamilton graduate of Ontario College of Art with a distinctive vision born of obsession, an explorer’s curiosity, and an uncommon engagement with aspects of Canadian history, settings and peoples. Her paintings have an energetic immediacy, reflecting the visceral response evoked in her by the subjects she is compelled to convey. Painting trips have taken her to James Bay, and beyond, in search of landscapes and experiences that insist on being expressed in their own unique way. The results are at times richly meditative, at other times layered and complex. Always, the work is a blend of sophistication and naiveté, the direct response of a skilled hand, an unjaded eye.
