Pearl Gallery: “Vanishing Beauty” Amazonian Art, Oct 2
Previewing September; Opening October 2: The Pearl Company is especially pleased to present “Vanishing Beauty”, an exhibition of Amazonian art. Gallery hours: 1 to 4, Wednesday through Sunday; 6 to 8 Thursday and Friday evenings. (Also by chance or appointment.) Call 905-524-0606.
Also featuring the multi-talented Brazilian fabric artist, Grace Kawall.
On a trip to the Peruvian Amazon, Hamiltonian Henry Board discovered a group of artists witnessing the destruction of their tropical paradise. Deeply attracted by the representational yet mystical depictions of their rain forest surroundings, Henry acquired some pieces, eventually sponsoring the production of a whole collection. The Amazonian Art shows in New York and Toronto that followed raised consciousness concerning the natural beauty being lost to us. All of humanity is becoming aware of the sense of urgency and this is our small way of contributing to preservation. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these pieces will go directly to the artists to help keep this light alive.
As part of the month long exhibit, supporting films, lectures, and discussion groups will highlight the decimation of the Amazon Rain Forest and its disastrous consequences for the planet.
With countless solo exhibitions in the U.S.A. and elsewhere Grace Kawall brings 40 years experience as an innovator in the genre. One of the first modern textile artists from Sao Paulo she elevated the craft to the level of fine art then went abroad for further research and to accompany her peers on the world stage. Besides presenting her colourful eclectic work, Grace will also be offering workshops for students and other members of the community. Anyone wishing to avail themselves of this rare opportunity may contact The Pearl Company. See a slide show of her work on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZCuUa5aFuE
