Woman of Distinction: Barbara Milne

Ten women were honoured May 5, 2009, for their contributions to Hamilton’s community, at the annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards, in the Hamilton Convention Centre. The new Artword Ensemble will perform a sampler from our upcoming musical play You Are What You Do, written and directed by Ronald Weihs, with Heidi Ann Crocini, Simon De Abreu, Paula Grove, Valeri Kay, Tanis Macarthur, Allan Merovitz, Gordon Odegaard, Nea Reid.

Cabaret and Concert Nights, programed by Artword and The Pearl Company:
Fridays – The Pearl Coffee House at 8:30 pm (a feature and guest artists, ranging from acoustic musicians to dancers, poets, spoken word artists),
Saturdays – Concert Night and Special Events at 8:30 pm (new and established musicians, ranging from folk, world, and country to jazz and classical)
Sunday once a month – Film Night, Host’s Choice, at 7 pm, films chosen and introduced by each night’s host. beginning November 2.

You Are What You Do, Artword’s musical play about real people and their jobs, written and directed by Ronald Weihs, October 16 to 26, 2008 
Rascals and Numskulls: The Robert Land Project, a family show based on the thrilling adventures of Robert Land, Hamilton’s first settler (and Landsdale neighbourhood’s namesake), a secret agent for the British during the American Revolution, and close ally of the famous Mohawk leader Joseph Brant. Music direction by Gary Santucci, for early December 2008
Sunamabeach, a new play by Charly Chiarelli about Hamilton, for March 2009. (Artword Theatre developed Charly’s two previous hits Cu’Fu? and Mangiacake, directed by Ronald Weihs.)
Tobacco Troubadour, a new work with songs by Hamilton songwriter and musician J.P. Riemens and script by Ronald Weihs, about growing up as a musician in tobacco country, for April 2009. (more…)

** Beautification, Park Cleanup and Yard Sale, Sat June 28 9 am to 1 pm (help us plant, cleanup and the yard sale is a fundraising for LANA)

** SUMMER IN THE PARK: Sunday July 6 from 1 to 5 pm
Hotdogs, face painting, outdoor art show, Salvation Army band, and more…
Plus the Pearl’s soundstage for music, performers, entertainers.

TLC Summer Programming begins June 30

 NEWS! The first day of camp will be a Parent and Youth Open House on Monday June 30, 9:00 – 3:00 at The Pearl. Come and meet Simon De Abreu (TLC Project Coordinator) and the TLC artists who are teaching and facilitating this exceptional summer program for children and youth.

The Theatre of Liberation Community Project provides a unique learning experience for young people in Hamilton from the ages of 7 to 17 through two 2 week summer sessions in July and August at the Pearl Company, 16 Steven Street.
First session: June 30 to July 11, Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

TLC Sessions use participatory theatre games and exercises to aid young people to connect with the creative energy within them. (more…)

Artword Auditions continue June-July

Artword Theatre will continue their Get Acquainted Auditions for actors in Hamilton for a few weeks. Call 905-543-8512 for an appointment. Artword Theatre focuses on original work using ensemble theatre techniques that mix music, text, and movement. We are interested in people who have additional performance skills, such as singing, dancing, playing instruments, etc. We welcome performers from diverse backgrounds.
Auditions will take place in June at The Pearl Company, 16 Steven Street at King William, Hamilton.

Pearl Company News, Opus Mundi wrap-up

Pearl Company News!

The first Opus Mundi Festival, our Multi-Disciplinary Artistic Convergence at The Pearl Company (April 25 to May 4, 2008), has been a wonderful (not to mention exhausting) experience. Thanks to everyone who did get out to a show or two – or five – and for those that did not – you missed some magic! The music, dada dance, the puppet show, the Sudanese folk tale, Catherine Silverglen’s one-woman show, it was all magical.! We expect, however, to make this an annual event so next year…. (more…)
